KUPANA: Living Out Our Core Values
KUPANA is a program within Game Changers Idaho (GCI) that embodies our core values: Empowerment, Commitment, Community, and Celebration. This program combines service, teamwork, and giving back to create an unforgettable impact.
What is KUPANA?
KUPANA—in Swahili, it means “To Give.”
When Gabriel Moreno founded Game Changers Idaho, he was also working in education, teaching refugee students. His passion for serving both the refugee community and children with disabilities led to something unique—a program where both groups benefit.
Think about it: how often do we see children with disabilities in a position to help others? Too often, they’re the ones being served. But at GCI, we flip that narrative. These kids don’t just participate in sports, they’re given the opportunity to serve others and make a real impact.
“This program is such a big part of my personal life because I know what it feels like to be helped as a child. Not only that, but I also understand the feeling I get when I am in a position to help others. I know GCI parents absolutely love this program because we put their kids in a position to serve others. Their kids are not treated as charity cases but as individuals capable of helping others. Regardless of ability, anyone can help another as long as they are given that opportunity. At GCI, we are giving kids with disabilities that opportunity to go beyond themselves.” ~ Gabriel Moreno
Making a Global Impact
Every other year, GCI athletes participate in a jog-a-thon, hosted by SoleKIDS, to raise funds for a powerful cause. With the funds raised, we purchase and deliver wheelchairs to individuals in Peru who lack access to mobility aids. But our mission doesn’t stop there.
During our time in Peru:
- We personally deliver wheelchairs, ensuring that recipients get the support and dignity they deserve.
- GCI volunteers host soccer camps for children with disabilities, creating moments of joy, celebration, and connection.
- Our athletes experience firsthand the power of service, realizing the impact they can make beyond the field.
Why It Matters
KUPANA is more than a program. It’s a movement! It’s about using sports as a vehicle to foster empathy, teamwork, and global awareness. It’s about athletes realizing their capacity to change lives. And it’s about celebrating every milestone, every connection, and every act of kindness along the way.
